 2.  Flower Folklore: 

Lets see how much 'we' (by that I mean 'you') know about flower folklore and mythology. For each flower there are a number of statements - select which are valid (or said to be true), and which are not. Hint - there may be more than one true statement per plant!

A. The Lily:

  • A1. Supposedly sprang from the tears of Eve (according to Semitic Legend).

  • A2. The Greeks said the Lily comes from the milk of the mother of the Gods.

  • A3.  Aphrodite supposedly hated lilies.

  • A4. In Christian symbolism the lily stands for purity, chastity and innocence.

  • A5. The lily was supposedly a symbol of the Virgin Mary

B. The Tulip:

  • B1. Called tulip because they reminded a Sultan of Turkey of his turban.

  • B2. Growing tulips in Holland caused the country financial disaster at one time.

  • B3. In the 1600's the tulip was regarded as an arrogant vain and cool plant.

  • B4. Its now associated with spring and life after death.

  • B5. Called lale in Persia it was the symbol of perfect love.

 

C. The Violet:

  • C1. Napoleon was nicknamed the 'Caporal Violet'.

  • C2. Shakespeare said that the violet was the symbol of innocent love.

  • C3. Mohammed called the violet a symbol of the power of his teachings

  • C4. Goethe said he heard a violet say "I am hidden and stooped and shun conversation" (but the flower probably spoke in German!)

  • C5. Represents the humility and determination of the Virgin Mary

D. The Cornflower:

  • D1. One of Tutenkhamens necklaces included many cornflowers.

  • D2. Seen as a symbol of loyalty and constancy because of its intense blue color.

  • D3. Seen as a symbol of disloyalty and inconstancy because it changes from blue to purple!

  • D4. Brushing cornflowers over ones eyes supposedly improves eyesight and reduces swelling.

  • D5. Regarded as a symbol of the Virgin Mary.

E. The Rose:

  • E1. Symbol of love and joy and a paragon of virtue (thats an easy one!)

  • E2. The first Christians regarded the rose as a symbol of Roman decadence.

  • E3. 19th century French prostitutes were known as "roses"

  • E4. Roses were used to treat headaches and hysteria (which you get from taking too many Internet quizzes!)

  • E5. Aphrodite also hated roses!
